The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that the Naptown Pirates have been added to their record-setting expansion for the upcoming season.

“It is great to be back in Indianapolis, the birthplace of the iconic ABA league and brand,” stated ABA CEO Joe Newman.  “We’ve been looking for the right owner to take charge and in Accie Smith, we found just the man to help maximize the potential of the team.  He has some exciting plans and I know that Indianapolis fans will  appreciate having fan-friendly, exciting and affordable professional basketball as an option and alternative to the Indiana Pacers.”

Newman continued, “Though it was many years ago, people still remember Roger Brown, Billy Keller, Mel Daniels, Bob Netolicky, Rick Mount and other Pacer legends.

The excitement of the original ABA is still in the hearts of so many.  Now, with its combination of NCAA, NBA, international and our own unique rules, fans will get to see basketball as it should be played – full court, fast paced – and affordable.  We’re also proud to say that the current President/GM of the Indiana Pacers, Kevin Pritchard, is a former Head Coach and player in our ABA and began his professional career in the ABA.”

“We are fortunate also to have several great ABA teams in Indiana, including a previous ABA Champion, the Indiana Lyons along with the Hoosier State Instigators, the Indiana Shuckers, and the Indiana Legends, so fans will see many familiar Indiana high school and college players on the court.”

“Being a native of Indianapolis and a graduate of Kokomo High School, I remember the ABA and what it can be – and that’s what I hope to resurrect with the Naptown Pirates and am hoping the fans of Indianapolis will give us a chance to show how exciting the ABA game and league are.”

Complete details will be forthcoming.
